16. Questions & Answers
What is the deep approach in the field of education at large:
  • It is a way to deepen and improve education and make it more meaningful; it targets authentic apprenticeship, deep learning, and identity growth in action.
  • It is a transdisciplinary way of considering and enacting education, integrating disciplinary content, interdisciplinary skills within experiential projects that aim at self-actualization and social action.
It is an expression of applied semiotics; this overarching transdiscipline studies how signs shape human understanding,

- social contracts, and cross-cultural development for human growth.

- It is based on process philosophy; it is highly compatible with complexity theory and an integrated theory of mind that is creational.

- Politicized for the cause of humanity, ecology and the earth, and the requirement for a new way of organizing human life.

What the deep approach is not:

- It is not a doctrine, as it is not dogmatic.

- It is not elitist, as it is destined for all.

- It is not partisan for the left or the right, both of which tend to polarize humans for economic purposes. It is for a politic of the human.

How do you approach depth?

You approach educative depth by focusing on the imaginary, creativity and “poiesis” in action and on the apprenticeship process rather than the learning outcomes.

Deep education describes an attempt to reach a deeper level of awareness, proficiency, achievement, and fulfillment that allows cross-realities communication and dialogue.

How has the deep approach been conceived?

The deep approach of languages and cultures was initiated by François Victor Tochon, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

While the concept of depth had been developed in some disciplines such as ecology, economy, culture, psychology, reading, Tochon’s deep approach to world language education is a unique and integrative creation that allows for the passage from theory to practice in the modern language classroom.

DEEP UNIVERSITY

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
