. Project-Based Learning: Hol-Acts

Hol-Acts are holistic actions that frame educative projects. Project-based methodologies engage students in interrelated activities of an individual or cooperative nature to accomplish concrete projects.

A project is a holistic, thematic unit that leads to whole actions. The project can be conceptual. It includes a variety of tasks, which keeps the institutional system open. Such projects facilitate interpersonal exchanges, thereby increasing motivation and creating environments that are rich in meaningful second language use. Useful knowledge grows empirically.

Real-world themes, issues, problems and actions stimulate intrinsic motivation and create reflective situations to solve problems in their context, in a way that respects the autonomy of the student and is conducive to proficiency.

Project-based learning compared to other approaches enhances the quality of student learning; it positively affects problem solving and decision making capacities. Projects tend to reduce learners’ anxiety and engender positive attitudes toward the discipline.

Project-based learning promotes expression, interpersonal exchange, individual thought, and personal apprenticeship. Apprenticeship is understood here as the creation of entirely new knowledge, knowledge that was not produced by the teacher. Exposing students to new habits of self-directed learning may help them to be in charge of their own learning and to develop proficiency.

When projects target interpersonal and social situations in the other language, situated modeling, scaffolding, collaboration, and coaching stimulate various forms of socialization that enhances knowledge, skills and experiences within contexts genuinely and informally created by the learners through collaboration.

Language apprenticeship emerges from learning by doing within the context of meaningful action, which is highly conducive to language acquisition and proficiency.

DEEP UNIVERSITY

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
