FRAMES FOR PROFESSIONAL REFLECTION

In professional education, the following frames have been found to be especially useful:

The functional frame is aimed at activity mastery, and orients activities according to the results of the task to be performed.  The discussion is organized around well defined objectives, and deals with effective behavior and with performance indicators.

The psychocognitive strategic frame emphasizes the conceptual structures of professional education.  In this case, discussion bears on plan actualization, interactive decisions, cognitive styles, work methods, and the mental strategies employed in problem solving.

The sociocognitive constructivist frame links the process of coming to awareness with authentic professional experiences that challenge widely held notions.  The culture of cooperative apprenticeship that is thus created brings about epistemic conflicts and models situations by analogy.

The sociocritical frame functions within a social, democratic, and participative perspective, and proposes empowerment over the act of becoming a professional and examination of those aspects of interaction that turn professional development into a process of either oppression or liberation. The sociocritical approach can be feminist, ethnic, ethical, ecological, social, and so on.

The personal frame is the foundation for autobiographical or narrative approaches to human experience.  It is focused on the individual.  The process of personal growth is linked to a humanist, phenomenological (ie experiential), psychoanalytical, or spiritual approach to experience.

The pragmatic, semiotic frameis focused on the language of practice.  The explicitation of practical arguments and of the intentions related to situations allows for an exploration of knowledge in its context.  Conversations about the grounds for action link know-how to knowledge.

Each professional development team can choose their frame for reflection in their projects. They also can choose to alternate conceptual frameworks, or to having each individually a personalized frame to contribute uniquely to the discussion of their team. The pluralism of ways of seeing is inspired by a democratic vision of knowledge.

DEEP UNIVERSITY

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
