Language Immersion on the Work Place

The issue at hand is to integrate a broad variety of educational needs and gather different types of actor-participants. The proposal here is to integrate within the University Campus a professional apprenticeship system such as the Swiss or the German ones. This allows for the development of professional skills in various fields (electricity, mechanics, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, etc) also viewed from a transdisciplinary perspective and certifiable; connected to local enterprises offering work setting on the University campus in the target language (or in both languages depending on the language immersion neighborhood). Organizing the apprenticeship system would be a plus for the local development of professional skills.

The concept of a Language Immersion Village can be adopted for this initiative. For example, English Villages are language education institutions that aim to create alanguage immersion environment for students of English in their own country. The concept is run as a commercial venture in Valdelavilla, Spain, and Umbria, in Italy, and is organized by the Gyeonggi English Culture Foundation in a quasi-governmental way in South Korea. One-month vacation intensive immersion programs are also offered in the Ansan English Village established on Daebu Island on the coast of the Yellow Sea, and in the Seoul English Village contracted by the Seoul government to a consortium of local companies; the campus, located in Songpa-gu has an area of 16,500 m².

It would be best if the local decision makers where the Deep University will be located were creating a balance between languages and culture and offered an equivalent Language Village in their local language for international students who speak English. This would create a win-win situation, in which the English speakers would be attracted to learn the local language while creating an environment in which English is being shared as well.

There has been much progress in the research field known as ‘English as a Lingua Franca’ in which non-native varieties of English are welcome and the norm can be adapted to ease the way to cross-national communication, across ASEAN countries for instance.

DEEP UNIVERSITY

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
