Constructing The Pocket Deep University Campus
This campus has close synergies with the proposed Arena Campus, Wisconsin (U.S.) in terms of a tranquil country setting and the potential for developing a strong relationship with the land and local history, Indigenous peoples and culture. The Byron Shire Council values environmental education and is a leader in encouraging green technology and sustainability. All building constructions require a permit from the council and currently the proposed land consists of 100 acres zoned as suitable for farming and is approved for two dwellings, which can be large. Multiple occupancy is also a popular feature of the local area. Campus buildings will be architecturally designed to fit in with the natural landscape and work in with the climate and environmental needs. The land has a creek and rises to the ridgeline at the back to approximately 400 meters with rainforest and bushwalks, and views to the top of Mount Warning.
Land use and course offerings
The land offers a variety of usage for the campus allowing for creativity in meeting the university’s mission and vision in terms of OAK - Opportunity, Altruism and Knowledge. It is able to provide a retreat for deep learning and reflection besides incorporating an element of ecotourism and the fostering of intensive courses and specialized activities that connect to the surroundings.
